Portland Police Dog Shot and Euthanized During Arrest

According to a video released by the Portland police in Oregon, USA, on October 8th local time, on September 24th, the police accidentally shot a police dog while arresting a suspect involved in a murder case.

On the same day, the Malone County District Attorney’s Office announced that the prosecutor determined that the actions of the involved officer were legal and in accordance with Oregon state law, and the case did not require submission to a grand jury for review.

According to multiple media reports, September 24, 2026, will be the last duty day of Portland police dog Kelo before her official retirement.

It is a German Shepherd that has been serving for about 6 years. It should have been a celebratory last shift, but Kelo was accidentally shot by police during the operation to arrest a suspect in a murder case. Despite efforts to save him, he was euthanized after failing to recover.

The prosecution stated that the body cameras of two Portland police officers clearly captured the suspect pulling out a silver pistol. He first held the gun with his right hand, then with both hands, with the gun barrel pointing directly at the officer. After that, he turned the gun to his left hand. The officers repeatedly asked him to “put down the gun,” but the suspect did not comply. Subsequently, four law enforcement officers fired almost simultaneously, firing a total of 13 shots. Autopsy revealed that the suspect had been struck approximately 10 times on the front of his torso and arms.

Reports indicate that the police dog Kelo was positioned right behind the suspect, near the area where crossfire was taking place, and thus was hit by bullets fired by some of the officers.
