Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid posted a statement on social media on October 8, stating that due to the series of unilateral sanctions imposed by the British government against Israel, Israel officially closed its consulate in Jerusalem on that day and ordered the British consul general and 20 diplomats to leave the country.
Sal said in his post that this move is in response to a number of ‘unilateral measures’ taken by the British Labour government since its inauguration in July 2024, and emphasized that ‘Israel does not want tensions between the UK and Israel to escalate further.’
According to the latest report from the BBC, the UK has stated that the consulate will not be closed and will continue to operate as part of the 'British Mission'.

The direct trigger for this diplomatic incident was the sanctions announced by the UK on September 8, 2026.
According to British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, announced in Parliament on that day, the UK will ban the import of all goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and restrict British companies from providing financing, construction, advertising, and other services related to these settlements. Miliband also recently described some actions by settlers as ‘genocide’.
As a direct countermeasure, Israeli Foreign Minister Salonikoff announced a series of 'retaliation measures' on the same day. These measures included the request to close the British Consulate in Jerusalem within 30 days. In addition, Israel also announced the withdrawal of the British representative from the U.S.-led 'International Gaza Support Center', the cessation of British activities training Palestinian security forces in Ramallah, and the prohibition of 12 British officials from entering Israel.
Before the expiration of the 30-day deadline, both parties made secret diplomatic efforts. According to a report by Xinhua News Agency on October 5th, British Prime Minister's National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell secretly visited Israel in early October, attempting to persuade Israel to revoke its decision to close the consulate. However, no agreement was reached during the negotiations. A spokesman for the consulate clearly stated on October 5th that the consulate would "close as scheduled on October 8th."
According to information publicly available on the UK government's official website, the closed British Consulate in Jerusalem is not an ordinary diplomatic institution. It is located in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in East Jerusalem, with a history of nearly 200 years. Its uniqueness lies in its direct responsibility for relations between the UK and Palestinians, handling matters related to Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. The closure of this consulate essentially cuts off an important official communication channel between the UK and Palestinian communities.
According to the BBC, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said that some staff members have been 'temporarily evacuated' for safety reasons. However, he emphasized that the mission will 'work with the Palestinian people'.
It is worth noting that this closure does not affect the British Embassy in Tel Aviv.
