Merchant Ship Sinks in Black Sea, Two Crew Members Killed

According to AFP, on October 5th local time, a merchant ship sailing in the Black Sea caught fire and sank, resulting in the death of two crew members. The exact cause of the accident is still unknown.

According to a statement issued by the Romanian Ministry of Interior, at around 11:00 local time on the 5th, the Romanian Coast Guard received notice of a fire aboard a merchant ship within the Romanian exclusive economic zone. Eleven crew members were rescued, and the identities of the two deceased crew members have been confirmed.

According to data from ship tracking websites, this merchant vessel flew the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis. At the time of the incident, it was headed towards the port of Ravenna in Italy, and its last port of call was the port of Izmer in Ukraine.

Romania has not yet announced the specific cause of the sinking of the merchant ship. According to AFP, when asked whether the merchant ship was attacked by drones, the Romanian Ministry of Defense did not respond.
