Mnuchin Claims China Stealing American AI Models

According to a report by the American news site Axios on October 3rd, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin claimed in an interview that Chinese artificial intelligence models are undergoing 'industrial-scale distillation', which is a euphemistic way of saying they are stealing American models.

He also said, “One of their powerful models is Kimi. Kimi considers itself to be Claude (developed by Anthropic). Kimi will tell you that it is indeed Claude.”

On September 10, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce stated that China believes the accusations by the US side that Chinese artificial intelligence companies engage in “industrial-scale” model distillation are baseless and have no legal foundation. “The US’s actions are attempts to politicize and instrumentalize this normal technological and commercial practice within the industry, while also applying double standards in practice. The US’s related announcements are further evidence of its efforts to establish technological hegemony and monopolize computing power in the field of artificial intelligence, thereby suppressing competition. China firmly opposes this.”
