According to reports from The Associated Press on October 1st, two American officials revealed that U.S. Secretary of State Rubio ordered the Iranian Foreign Minister and his delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly to leave New York immediately.
Although relations between the United States and Iran remain hostile, the Trump administration did issue visas to Iran’s president, foreign minister, and their respective delegations, allowing them to attend United Nations meetings. However, strict restrictions were imposed on their activities.
Iranian President Pervazchiyan left New York one day after delivering a speech at the United Nations last week, but Foreign Minister Alaghizari remained in New York, nominally to participate in indirect negotiations with the United States. These negotiations involve the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, ending conflicts, and resuming negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear program.
According to some reports, Alagzi was originally scheduled to stay in New York until Wednesday.
However, after almost no progress was made in the talks between Iran and Qatar’s mediators over the weekend, Rubio lost patience and informed Iran on Monday that Alaaghiieh and his delegation must leave New York immediately.
Two American officials familiar with the decision revealed the above information. As it involves the decision-making process within the Trump administration, both officials requested to remain anonymous.
One official stated that Ruo Bio believes that the Iranian delegation has "overstepped their welcome" and should leave since the UN high-level meeting has concluded.
Alagzi and his team left New York early Tuesday morning.
However, the Iranian Permanent Mission to the United Nations denied on Wednesday that they had been ordered by the US to leave the country.
The Iranian delegation wrote on its official X account: "The Iranian delegation left New York in the evening of Monday, following the scheduled itinerary. This itinerary was also notified to the US Department of State well in advance on September 17."
"The Iranian delegation claims: 'After the US State Department had yielded no results, they were left with only spreading unfounded and meaningless news.'"
