According to Bloomberg's report on September 29th, former Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission warned that artificial intelligence companies are facing some urgent challenges, including competition from Chinese AI models, as well as possible security measures that may be introduced.
Gary Gershela said in an interview on Tuesday that there are indeed security issues related to artificial intelligence, citing the example of OpenAI’s models cracking into tech company Hugging Face earlier this year. He claimed that there are concerns about the capabilities of artificial intelligence. While security measures can be implemented, competition from China adds a “significant and profound variable” to this issue.
Earlier this month, some leading figures in the artificial intelligence industry called for a slowdown in the development of the most advanced AI models. However, this proposal was quickly rejected by U.S. President Donald Trump. Furthermore, Trump also rejected the initiative to establish protective measures for artificial intelligence through international agreements.
"This is a real challenge. I know that the president calls it a scam." Ren said. He was referring to Trump's previous claims regarding AI risk that he dismissed without taking them seriously. "We have different views on this point."
Gengsler stated that American AI companies are "investing enormous funds", but he questioned whether the companies' revenue could sustain such a massive expenditure. He said, although the US currently leads in the field of artificial intelligence, American businesses still have the potential to shift towards utilizing products from Chinese competitors in the future.
