California Shooting Sparks Domestic Violence Investigation

On September 28th, local time, a shooting incident reported by American police caused much discussion across the United States.

According to the Associated Press, last weekend, a 77-year-old Asian couple in California shot each other at a city park, killing their son-in-law. Court documents show that the victim was a transgender person who had been accused of domestic violence and child abuse. The victim was also fighting for custody of the children with the couple’s daughter.

According to reports, on Saturday afternoon, Jonathan McInnes, a 40-year-old game engineer at The New York Times, was shot and killed in the parking lot of a sports center in eastern California. Local police said in a press release that an officer was driving nearby at the time and saw McInnes lying on the ground. Witnesses began calling 911 and identified the couple who were still near the scene.

The police subsequently arrested 77-year-old local residents Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, who are suspected of murder and other crimes. The two were scheduled to appear in court this Wednesday morning.

It is currently unclear whether either of the two individuals has hired lawyers. The phone numbers of their daughter, Candice Jang, have all been turned off.

According to the Associated Press, this shooting incident occurred one week before the hearing in McInse and Candice’s divorce case. Court records show that the couple got married around 2012 and has three young children.

Other court records show that Candice reported McInnes to the police in 2023, accusing him of pushing one of their children and frequently engaging in violent physical punishment against them. In October last year, McInnes was arrested for another case and charged with minor child abuse. Candice also applied for a domestic violence restraining order against McInnes. The police said that McInnes admitted hitting a child and was charged with endangering the safety of another child.

McGinnis was on bail at the time of her murder and was attempting to participate in a mental health rehabilitation program.

Additionally, US media reported that McInnes is a transgender person. McInnes sued his wife Candice for domestic violence and applied for a restraining order, as well as filing for divorce. At that time, he told the court that Candice had made offensive remarks against LGBTQ+ people and accused her of abusing him during the period when he was undergoing gender transformation surgery.

According to The New York Times, McInnes joined the newspaper in January 2023 as the engineering director for the gaming department, residing in the San Francisco Bay Area.
