According to the Associated Press, on September 27 local time, Serbian President Vucic addressed the public and announced his resignation from the presidency.
He stated that he resigned in order to participate in the parliamentary elections scheduled for the 25th of next month as an 'ordinary citizen', in order to strive for a position as the Prime Minister of the new government.
Vucic previously stated in an interview that no previous president had done this. They either ran as presidents or, conversely, ran as prime ministers. "I want to be the first. I want to run as an ordinary person, as an ordinary citizen."
Vucic served as the Prime Minister of Serbia from 2014 to 2017. In April 2017, he was elected president, and was re-elected in May 2022. According to Serbian constitution, the presidential term is five years, with the possibility of re-election once. His second term was originally scheduled to end in May 2027.
