AI Boom and Trumps Skepticism: Michael Burry Weighs In on US Economic Future

Recently, debates surrounding artificial intelligence in the American political and business circles have intensified suddenly.

On one side, "AI godfather" Jeffrey Dean, CEO of Anthropic, and others continuously warn that AI can bring catastrophic risks; on the other side, U.S. President Donald Trump and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang openly refute the "AI apocalypse theory".

Now, the well-known short seller and known as the "Big Short" Michael Burry has also joined this debate.

According to StockTwits on September 27th, Berry recently stated that the construction of AI infrastructure has become a key factor supporting the U.S. economy. The government led by Trump simply cannot afford to fail in this AI boom.

"Trump and his team are well aware that AI narratives and infrastructure development are the only things currently supporting America's economy from continuing to function, and also the most positive progress this year." Berri wrote on Substack.

"They can't bear it if it collapses." Bork said. He simultaneously questioned, what measures Washington could take to stop the market from turning down if they truly were facing a downturn.

As one of the most well-known skeptics of AI, Berry has been selling off stocks related to AI, and has warned investors that a major sell-off could occur in the market in the future.

And while Mr. Bili released his statements at that time, investors were increasingly concerned about a possible slowdown in AI hype.

OpenAI, Anthropic, and other tech companies' executives recently warned that with the rapid development of this emerging technology, its risks to humanity are also rising.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wrote in a post on September 12, calling for the AI industry to slow down the development of new models. He warned that the pace of AI technology development could exceed human capabilities to control this technology.

After the article was published, Musk immediately posted a comment expressing his agreement, saying "Dario is right." OpenAI's CEO Ortega also wrote an article in support.

But on the other side, Trump is trying to consolidate America’s leading position in the field of artificial intelligence and make it a national and economic priority. He has also repeatedly spoken out against the “AI slowdown theory”.

Trump believes that the United States should not give up an industry with a potential value of trillions of dollars just because of the risks involved. “We are in the lead, and we are building massive facilities worth trillions of dollars. Why would we give up?” Trump said during the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois on September 27.

According to reports, Berry also questioned that the United States now has very limited tools available to deal with the next financial crisis.

"The U.S. government's current situation in dealing with the financial crisis or sovereign debt crisis is the worst in modern history." He stated that the "arrows in the quiver of the U.S. government are almost out, and most of them are dull."
