According to a report by Reuters on September 22, U.S. President Donald Trump used his speech at the United Nations General Assembly to justify his war against Iran. He claimed that he had prevented Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons and warned that if an agreement to end the conflict could not be reached, he might "annihilate the Islamic Republic of Iran."
While predicting that his government will reach a peace agreement with Iran after the American mid-term elections on November 3rd, Trump called on other countries to isolate Iran economically, along with the United States, in order to force it back to the negotiating table.
Trump said, "I have a major decision to make: should I reach an agreement with Iran so that they can rebuild and create a nation stronger than ever before? Or should I eliminate the Islamic Republic of Iran, act quickly, and never give them the opportunity to kill and destroy people and nations again?"
He later told reporters at the United Nations that U.S. officials had a three-hour, 'very good' meeting with the Iranian delegation on the 22nd. He then apparently clarified that special envoy Steve Wertkovich and Jared Kushner met directly with the mediator, not with Iranian officials.
He told reporters at the beginning of his meeting with leaders of Gulf countries at the United Nations: “Steve and Jared have had a very productive meeting today with the mediator for Iran—just a mediator. Let’s see what the outcome will be.”
Since returning to his second term last year, Trump has caused a significant disruption to global order: he joined forces with Israel to attack Iran, ordered raids on Venezuela and captured its leader, and even threatened to take control of Greenland.
In his 37-minute speech, Trump outlined his foreign policy vision, stating that the war against Iran "saved the world from a nuclear weapons threat," and claimed that America's dominance in the Western Hemisphere is crucial to preventing crises from arising.
Trump said, "Our actions in Venezuela prove that the United States will no longer allow threats against the United States to take root anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. While others talk about peace, I have created peace."
Trump does not agree with the view that midterm elections could limit his ability to handle this war. In these midterm elections, Republicans may lose control of the Congress. Some analysts believe that if Democrats take control of the legislative bodies, it will weaken his bargaining power in the conflict.
Trump addressed the Iranian leadership: "What they don't realize is that I am not running for election. I am already president, and I won with an overwhelming majority. I will be here for another two and a half years."
In terms of diplomacy, Trump spoke highly of Mieczyszka Hyecz, calling her a friend and predicting that she would be "recorded in history as one of the great prime ministers."
According to Reuters, Trump's appearance this time was not as dramatic as in 2025. At that time, he delivered a provocative speech, criticizing world leaders and warning some countries were 'moving towards hell'. He also complained about United Nations facilities after being briefly trapped due to a malfunctioning escalator and after a first malfunction of the speaker system.
Trump once again criticized the United Nations, emphasizing his efforts to reduce the bureaucracy of the UN, but did not make any new attacks or indicate that the United States would withdraw from any other UN agencies.
