Venezuela's Acting President Rodriguez arrived in New York on the 21st local time. She will attend the United Nations General Assembly and meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.
An awkwardly, Venezuelan President Maduro is currently being detained by the United States in New York. While Rodriguez was giving a speech at the United Nations headquarters, Maduro was in a prison in Brooklyn, just over ten kilometers away from there.
Upon arriving in New York, Rodriguez posted on social media saying, "We arrived in New York with a belief in people's faith in encounters and unity between nations, with determination and hope."
According to a video published by American media reporters, when asked whether he would visit Maduro, Rodriguez remained silent and went straight onto the vehicle.
According to Venezuelan media outlet El Diario, as of now, there is no public information indicating that Rodriguez has submitted an application to the US for a visit with Maduro.
As acting president of Venezuela, Rodriguez does not automatically have the right to visit Maduro, but this does not mean that she cannot request a meeting.
The key is whether Rodriguez has the willingness to visit, and whether she is willing to take on the political implications that such a visit might entail.
According to a report by The Guardian in the UK on the 22nd, since the U.S. military forcibly captured Maduro in January this year, acting President Rodriguez has been forced to adopt a submissive attitude towards Washington, which is considered 'humiliating by most leaders'.
Reports indicate that Washington controls Venezuelas oil revenues, which means Rodríguez had to seek approval from a 32-year-old official at the U.S. State Department for the use of these funds.
Additionally, she allocated one-fifth of Venezuela’s oil reserves to a private company that holds shares from the Pentagon.
Analysts say that after succumbing to a series of demands from the United States, Rodriguez will receive her rewards this week. This visit to the United States will help her consolidate her domestic power, and by binding herself to American interests, she can delay the elections that could lead to her removal from office.
