According to reports by the Los Angeles Times and Page Six among other American media on September 8th, Kaye's luxury home is facing a serious issue of ground subsidence. Kaye was not present in the house at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported. American media states that it is currently not possible to contact his representative for comment.
According to reports, this 62-year-old actor purchased this four-story residence of approximately 4,000 square feet in 2024 for $10.5 million. The property boasts stunning sea views and a private rooftop terrace.
The sinkhole occurred on Tuesday morning, local time. According to KTLA, firefighters were called to the scene after receiving reports of a suspected gas pipeline rupture, and they witnessed this shocking sight.
Public information officials revealed that the collapse occurred on the private driveway in front of the mansion and part of the surrounding road. A ‘giant hole’ measuring about 30 feet in width and 25 to 30 feet deep was formed, engulfing pieces of asphalt and concrete. Even a mobile toilet used for construction work nearby was also caught up in the disaster.
The ground subsidence caused the underground natural gas pipelines and water pipes in that area to break and leak. Local fire departments and gas companies immediately cut off the gas supply to the entire street for emergency repairs.
According to American media reports, the cause of the accident was due to the massive waves caused by Hurricane ‘Mary’ and the heavy rain, which led to severe coastal erosion and hollowed out the foundation beneath the lanes.
As the crater continues to expand and the road becomes narrower, making it impossible for fire trucks to pass, the authorities in Malibu have declared a local emergency. Evacuation orders or restrictions on access have been issued for several residences, including those owned by the Ketch family. The city stated on Tuesday night that 7 residences had been marked with red labels due to dangerous conditions, and another 24 residences were also marked for the same reason because vehicles could not safely pass through the area.
The city stated in its emergency statement: "Due to extensive road collapses, the passage of emergency responders has been severely restricted. The remaining intact parts of the roads are too narrow to accommodate large equipment such as fire trucks, posing a significant risk to public safety and emergency response capabilities."
The gas supply in the affected area has been cut off. Municipal officials have warned that water supply services may also be suspended depending on the situation. It is still unclear how long the evacuation orders will last.
The statement also noted that the El Niño phenomenon during the autumn and winter months this year could exacerbate coastal erosion: “The increasingly intense ‘super’ El Niño phenomenon will bring record levels of sea level rise, severe coastal flooding, and the risk of beaches narrowing dramatically in California.”
