On the early morning of September 8th, local time, Russia resumed air strikes on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Previously, in order to facilitate the visits of U.S. special envoys to Moscow and Kyiv, Russia and Ukraine had suspended attacks on each other’s capitals for three days. The attacks occurred shortly after U.S. President Trump’s envoys Steve Waltz and Jared Kushner left Kyiv.
According to Reuters, Kyiv Mayor Klichko said that Russian troops used ballistic missiles to attack Kyiv that day, causing at least six people to be injured and triggering fires. The Kyiv military authorities said that a five-story apartment building and a three-story residential building were damaged, and some residents were trapped for a while. The National Emergency Service of Ukraine also reported that Kyiv, as well as the surrounding areas of Borispol and Fastiv, were attacked by drones.

AFP noted that this attack signifies the end of the three-day suspension agreed upon by Russia and Ukraine regarding the visit of the U.S. envoy. Initially, both countries agreed to refrain from attacking Moscow and Kiev during the visits of Wittockov and Kuschner to their capitals, but military operations in other areas did not cease. The Russian TASS reported that the three-day suspension ordered by Russian President Putin expired on the evening of the 7th local time.
Witkov and Kushner visited Moscow and Kyiv in succession. The two held a more than three-hour meeting with Putin at the Kremlin on the 5th, and then went to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, attempting to facilitate the resumption of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. The Kremlin previously stated that the discussions with the United States were "very beneficial," and indicated that there was no objection to the resumption of tripartite negotiations between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine. However, no specific arrangements have been announced yet.
Meanwhile, the mutual attacks between Russia and Ukraine continue. Russia says that on the 8th, Ukrainian drones attacked the Russian city of Saratov, causing damage to civilian infrastructure and injuries to people.
