According to Reuters, reported on September 8 local time, Houthi militants launched attacks against four cities in southern Saudi Arabia, resulting in 73 injuries and causing fires at local oil facilities. Reports indicate that Saudi Arabia, a U.S. ally, being attacked this time seems to mark a significant escalation in the six-month-long Middle Eastern conflict.
The Houthi rebels, who control the capital Sanaa in Yemen and most of the population's settlements in the country, have claimed to have launched a large-scale military operation deep into Saudi territory. They used drones and missiles to attack a Saudi Air Force base in the southern city of Haimis Mousheret, as well as a target near the Saudi National Petroleum Company in Abha, close to the Yemeni border at Nadjran. The operation also included targets in the Red Sea port city of Jizan, which has large oil refineries and power plants.
Saudi officials stated that the attack caused fires at several locations, and 73 people were injured, including women and children.
