On September 6, the WeChat public account “China Consulate General in Surabaya” reported that recent forest and mountain fires have occurred at the Ijen Volcano Reserve in East Java, Indonesia. The fires have spread to the core hiking trail near the volcano, and the situation remains dangerous with continuous fire activity.
According to an official notice from the Natural Resources Conservation Agency of Eastern Java Province (BBKSDA), the Ijen Volcano scenic area, hiking trails, and all tourism activities have been temporarily closed since September 4, 2026. The date of reopening will be announced later.
To effectively ensure the personal safety of Chinese citizens in the consulate area, the Chinese Consulate General in Surabaya hereby gives this urgent reminder:
1. Immediately suspend the journey
All Chinese tourists, mountaineering enthusiasts, and travelers planning to visit the Yizhen Volcano scenic area in Wan Nan Meng and Bangduo Suo areas are advised to cancel their trips and not to go there. During the fire situation, there are multiple safety hazards, including the spread of wildfires, suffocation due to thick smoke, closed roads, and blocked rescue efforts.
II. Adjust the itinerary in a timely manner
Citizens who have booked tours, climbs, ground transfers, and transportation and accommodation arrangements for Mount Izhen should contact their travel agencies, platforms, or hotels as soon as possible to cancel, reschedule, or rebook their reservations. This will help avoid delays and unnecessary losses.
III. Strictly comply with local regulations
The current scenic area is completely closed. It is strictly prohibited to take shortcuts, enter the mountains illegally, or engage in night hiking activities. Please keep an eye on the release of information about the reopening by local fire departments, disaster management departments, and the official authorities of the scenic area. Plan your trip only after the official reopening.
