The “Five Eyes Alliance” is the world’s largest intelligence organization. As a member state of this alliance, the United Kingdom has repeatedly promoted the theory of so-called “Chinese spies”. This time, it has targeted Chinese tractors as well.
According to a report by the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph on September 4th, an expert report claims that China may be using tractors and other connected agricultural machinery to carry out so-called 'spionage activities' against British farmers, and portrays China as a 'agricultural threat'.
This report was issued by the Security Technology Alliance (CST), led by British Labour MP Graeme Dunney.

The report claims that British food production is “dangerously exposed” to a “hidden safety risk,” which is inherent in the tools used on farms across the country. Chinese chips are now widely used in agricultural machinery, including GPS-navigated tractors, agricultural drones, and automatic irrigation systems.
This report, based on unfounded speculation, claims that organizations associated with China could infiltrate agricultural equipment in order to spy on the output of British farms and obtain information related to Britain’s food security.
According to the CST report seen by The Daily Telegraph, the agricultural sector's dependence on Chinese technology poses a broader threat to food security. Specifically referring to threats, the report mentions crop yields, production forecasts, and livestock numbers, claiming that espionage could enable China to ‘identify vulnerabilities in the UK food production system’.
Ultimately, the report calls on British cabinet ministers to regard connected agricultural technologies as a “newly emerging national resilience threat” and to develop strategies aimed at reducing reliance on high-risk, foreign-controlled communication components.
According to The Daily Telegraph, most modern connected devices use Cellular Internet of Things modules (CIM), with about 70% of these devices being produced in China.
The CST's smear campaign against China is nothing but old-fashioned rhetoric. Before tractors, the agency even claimed that China could use smart thermometers and refrigerators and other connected household devices for so-called espionage activities.
When discussing this report, Doni went on to exaggerate the situation, saying that "the threat posed by Chinese manufacturing technology goes far beyond electric vehicles and energy grids." He also called for action: "The government must address this threat before it is too late. In an era where food security becomes increasingly crucial for national security, we cannot ignore China's ambition to dominate the supply of advanced agricultural technologies."

According to British media reports, in recent years, British politicians and government agencies have frequently discussed the 'Chinese espionage theory'. British intelligence chiefs from the MI5 and the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) previously warned that foreign intervention has become a common phenomenon for those operating critical national infrastructure.
In June this year, the British MI5, along with intelligence agencies from other "Five Eyes" countries, issued a so-called "security alert," claiming that Chinese intelligence agencies were contacting Western personnel through false online recruitment efforts, in order to steal military, political, and technological classified information.
In response, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in the UK denied that the claims of “Chinese spy threats” were baseless and malicious slander. The embassy expressed strong condemnation towards such accusations. It should be noted that the “Five Eyes” organization is the world’s largest intelligence agency, with its members carrying out unhindered espionage and intelligence gathering activities around the world. It is these organizations that pose a real threat to peace-loving nations.
"We strongly advise the British side to immediately stop this amateurish performance of self-directed, self-framed 'catching thieves' that is both absurd and offensive, otherwise they will only humiliate themselves." Spokesperson emphasized.
