《Khmer Times》 September 3rd reported that recently, an officer in Pursat Province of Cambodia illegally blocked a vehicle carrying Chinese nationals. After suspecting the passengers may be involved in online fraud, he told the Cambodian driver he could "handle" the situation and was suspected of extortion for financial gain.
Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kha has ordered the demotion and suspension of his position on the 3rd.
Police officer involved in the incident is Lieutenant Colonel Long Wei Li, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Internal Security at the Police Department, also known as the Buddhist State Police.
At the time of the incident, the officer stopped a vehicle on the road and demanded to check the passports and other documents of the Chinese people in the car. Suspecting that the Chinese people in the car might be involved in online fraud, he offered to help “coordinate the situation” to the Cambodian driver, and was suspected of demanding money. The entire process was captured by a camera installed in the vehicle.
The Cambodian Ministry of Interior stated that the police officer violated regulations by stopping vehicles for identity checks, thereby breaking the principles and discipline rules of the police department.
According to the disciplinary decision, Shao Suoka’s rank was reduced from major to captain. He was also suspended from his duties and required to report daily to the police department’s personnel office during normal working hours.
