According to a report by the Russian Tass news agency on August 31, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov wrote an article stating that NATO's military activities in the Arctic region have increased, and the risk of 'catastrophic consequences' is growing. He warned that Russia sees NATO's actions in the Arctic as a 'direct security threat'.
Lavrov said that maintaining peace and cooperation in the Arctic region serves the interests of the entire international community. Russia supports this view, but some countries do not agree with it. He wrote: “Otherwise, how can we explain the fact that NATO and its member states are promoting militarization in the region and creating international tensions there.”
Laofrov mentioned that NATO initiated a military operation codenamed "Northern Sentinel" in February this year, aiming to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic region.
He accused NATO of conducting “aggressive large-scale exercises” near Russia’s northern border. He wrote: “Carrying out such military activities in the Arctic region poses a direct threat to Russian security, with an increasing risk of triggering armed conflicts and causing catastrophic consequences.”
Lavrov emphasized that the Arctic region is of great strategic importance to Russia's national interests and security. Russia will continue to develop infrastructure in the Arctic region in accordance with its domestic laws and national development goals. He urged Western countries to learn from past mistakes and not to engage in dialogue with Russia using language of sanctions and threats. “Russia is inclined towards constructive dialogue, but if necessary, we will use all available means to defend our national interests.”
On February 11th this year, the NATO Allied Command announced that NATO had launched a multi-domain military operation codened "Northern Watchdog," with the aim of enhancing NATO's continued presence in the Arctic region.
Regarding NATO's military activities, Maksilenkov, Director of the European Affairs Department at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded that having NATO conduct more exercises in the Arctic region would not bring any benefits. "The Arctic has long been a place of peace and cooperation for all participants. Undoubtedly, such exercises are destructive to the prospects of cooperation in the Arctic region and within its domain."
