According to the Iranian Tasnim News Agency, on August 23 local time, Iran's Petroleum Minister Paknajad announced that a large amount of natural gas was discovered in a gas field in southern Fars province. "It has been confirmed that there is a natural gas reserve of over 7.5 trillion cubic feet (212.3 billion cubic meters), of which approximately 5.7 trillion cubic feet can be exploited."
He also described the characteristics of this natural gas, calling it the so-called “sweet gas”, which “will reduce the costs of development and extraction”.
In addition, Pahunejad said that in addition to natural gas, a large amount of condensate oil was also discovered in this gas field.
According to the official website of China National Petroleum Corporation, natural gas that does not contain H₂S (hydrogen sulfide) is called "sweet gas", also known as desulfurized gas or purified gas. Natural gas containing H₂S and sulfides is referred to as acidic natural gas, or "acid gas". It is reported that for the exploitation of gas wells containing "acid gas", corresponding technical measures must be taken to address the three major issues: the highly toxic nature of H₂S, the severe corrosiveness caused by H₂S and CO₂, and the deposition of elemental sulfur. This is necessary to ensure production safety and prevent corrosion damage caused by acidic media.
