On August 23 local time, the Norwegian royal family issued a statement stating that the health condition of King Harald V had worsened during his hospitalization over the weekend, and he will continue to receive treatment at the University Hospital of Oslo.
The statement says: "The king's health deteriorated over the weekend. He is undergoing antibiotic treatment to control the bacterial infection in his blood, and the treatment has been effective. The situation is stable. The king will remain at the University Hospital of Oslo on sick leave until further notice."
The 89-year-old Harald V ascended to the throne as King of Norway in 1991. In recent years, he has been suffering from health problems. According to AFP, Harald V is receiving treatment for hemolytic anemia, a condition that reduces the number of red blood cells in the body, leading to symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath.
King Harald V was hospitalized on August 17th. His originally planned two-week sick leave has been cancelled, and his scheduled visits to the Trondheim region in central Norway on September 1st and 2nd have also been postponed. The Norwegian royal family stated that during Harald V's sick leave, the 53-year-old Crown Prince Haakon will temporarily take on the duties of the head of state.
