China-Indonesia Strategic Dialogue Promising New Cooperation

On August 24, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked whether China and Indonesia would promote more projects similar to the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail project under the high-level cooperation mechanism they have established. Now that China and Indonesia have established a comprehensive strategic dialogue mechanism, will both countries push forward the construction of more such projects like the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail?

Lin Jian stated that the comprehensive strategic dialogue mechanism between China and Indonesia is an important measure for both parties to implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state. It aims to deepen practical cooperation in various fields, promote the construction of a common destiny for China and Indonesia, and bring tangible benefits to the people of both countries.

Since its launch, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway has maintained safe, smooth, and orderly operations. It has transported over 16 million passengers, effectively improving local transportation conditions and facilitating travel for people along the line. It continues to drive economic and social development in Indonesia, as well as regional connectivity.

China is willing to work with Indonesia, relying on the bilateral comprehensive strategic dialogue mechanism, to continuously promote high-quality cooperation in the 'Belt and Road' initiative. We aim to achieve more new achievements in areas such as infrastructure, thereby injecting new momentum into each country's modernization process.

On August 21, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs, co-chaired the first meeting of the China-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue Mechanism with Indonesia's Foreign Minister Suyogino in Jakarta. Both sides exchanged in-depth views on promoting the establishment of a common destiny for China and Indonesia and reached broad consensus.

Both parties comprehensively reviewed and sorted out the progress of cooperation in various fields. They agreed to maintain strategic autonomy, firmly support each other’s core interests, and better coordinate development and security issues. This will provide strong guarantees for the modernization process of both countries. It was decided to initiate the formulation of a five-year action plan between China and Indonesia (2027-2031), to comprehensively promote cooperation under the ‘five pillars’.

Both sides agree to make good use of the comprehensive strategic dialogue as an important mechanism platform. They will accelerate the integration of various departments, ensure effective implementation, and achieve more tangible results as soon as possible. They also intend to consolidate and improve the 'five pillar' cooperation framework. Both sides agree to hold the second meeting of the dialogue mechanism in China next year.
