Trump Enacts Space Launch Initiative for US Commerce

According to Reuters, on August 20 local time, U.S. President Trump signed a memorandum aimed at significantly increasing the number of commercial space launches in the United States.

White House targets: By 2030, the United States will carry out at least 1,000 launch and re-entry missions per year.

Last year, the United States launched 178 spacecraft. This number is ten times higher than in 2013. Most of these launches were carried out by SpaceX, Musk’s company specializing in space exploration technology.

Trump also proposed that American astronauts return to the moon by 2028. The memo instructed NASA to promote commercial lunar transportation services, enable commercial robots to land on Mars, and explore ways to commercialize the delivery of humans to Mars.

The memorandum also states that, unless there are compelling reasons related to public safety or national security, federal agencies should not engage in U.S. government aerospace transportation projects, in order to avoid creating barriers, restraining or competing with U.S. commercial aerospace transportation industries.

According to reports, the director of the Federal Aviation Administration in the United States revealed in May this year that SpaceX plans to achieve the goal of 10,000 launches per year within five years.
