Zambian Police Raid Opposition Leaders Residence, Killing Former Minister Amid Election Dispute

According to the BBC on August 19th, the Zambian government stated that security forces raided a residence associated with opposition leader Brian Mundubile the day after the presidential elections last week. A former Zambian minister was killed during the operation.

A police spokesman said that Mutotwe Kafwaya was shot by law enforcement officers during a security operation in the capital, Lusaka, last Friday, and died from his injuries. Officials said that there was a exchange of fire between the two sides.

This raid resulted in the capture of 11 people. The authorities have accused Mdoubiliye's NRPUP party of "participating in insurrection activities" and "militia activities."

Currently, Mont D'Orbiyle has denied all charges and claimed they were "fabrications" entirely.

In an interview on Tuesday, Moen Du Bilai stated that after being shot during the raid, he had not received any information about Kavvaia’s whereabouts. Moen Du Bilai also said the raid took place at his own residence.

As calls from the outside world for authorities to disclose information about Kafwaya grew louder, the Zambian police confirmed his death on Wednesday evening.

The police said that 49-year-old Kafwaya died in a firefight during the raid carried out by the Joint Security Task Force. The police stated that the operatives were 'shot at and confronted by unidentified individuals, resulting in a retaliation'.

The police said, “During this process, an unidentified man suffered a fatal gunshot wound, and a firearm was seized at the scene.” The police added that the deceased was later identified by his family as Kavvaia.

According to the official election results, current President Hakainde Hichilema won a second five-year term with 60% of the votes. Mondubuli was ranked second with 38% of the votes. He refused to accept the election results, accused there was electoral fraud, and plans to challenge the decision in court.
