Young Americans Wary of AIs Impact on Job Market

Bloomberg reported on August 19 that surveys show that the youngest group of workers in the United States is growing increasingly concerned about artificial intelligence (AI). They worry that this technological advancement will lead to mass unemployment.

According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in June, 55% of adults under 30 in the United States are more worried than excited about AI technology. This is the first time since Pew started this survey in 2021 that this proportion has exceeded half.

This is consistent with the attitudes of most other age groups. Workers under the age of 30 were originally those who had the highest expectations for AI’s potential, but now they are the group that is most wary of AI. Currently, nearly three-quarters of this group believe that AI will lead to a reduction in job opportunities, a proportion higher than the 61% two years ago.

This survey highlights the complex relationship between young Americans and AI. They are skilled in using this technology, but at the same time, it threatens the entry-level positions that they need to enter the workforce.

Overall, more than half of the surveyed Americans are worried about AI. However, those who have established themselves in the workforce are becoming more positive towards AI, which supports the view that AI is beneficial for experienced individuals.

Currently, the impact of AI on job recruitment in the United States remains to be seen. There are signs that recruitment for junior positions has begun to slow down, and some corporate executives have openly stated that they are using AI to replace some human resources in order to save costs.
