According to Russian News Agency reports, on August 17 local time, in commenting on Japan's remarks regarding Russian President Putin's visit to Iturup Island (referred to as "Okioshima" by Japan), Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that Japan's leadership should take care of its domestic affairs, rather than "attacking" Russia.
Lavrov said that if the Japanese side wants to divert the international community's attention from its 'openly aggressive' military policies by ‘attacking’ Russia and accusing it of violating international law, ‘then I suggest they should mind their own business. There are many problems in their country that need to be addressed.’
He pointed out that Japan attempts to rewrite international law according to its own and American desires, trying to avoid historical responsibilities. It is also violating its own constitution by seeking to expand the activities of the Self-Defense Forces overseas. “This is certainly very concerning.”
On August 13, Putin inspected Itrup Island, located in the South Kuriles (referred to as the "Northern Four Islands" by Japan). This was Putin's first visit to the disputed island in his capacity as president. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihida immediately stated that this action "harms the feelings of the Japanese people and is absolutely unacceptable." The Japanese government subsequently summoned Russian Ambassador to Japan Nozdrel to express strong protest.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhalalova stated on the 17th that Russia has notified Japanese Ambassador to Russia Fujieda to arrive at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an interview on the 18th.
