According to a report by the Thai newspaper 'Nation', a proposal to impose a tourism fee of 450 Thai baht (approximately 92 yuan) on foreign tourists has been approved by the National Tourism Policy Committee of Thailand.
According to reports, the Thai government plans to implement charging measures in the first quarter of 2027. The charging will be carried out in phases, initially targeting all foreign tourists who enter Thailand by air. Gradually, the policy will be extended to include tourists who enter Thailand by land and sea.
The Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand stated that the fee of 450 Thai bahts is based on a standard calculation model, and was determined through research and calculations considering the current economic situation.
Compared to the previous proposed charging scheme, the new standard has adjusted the charging amounts: the old scheme suggested charging 300 Thai baht per person per flight for air-based visitors, and 150 Thai baht for land and sea-based visitors.
According to reports, the Thai government hopes to use this revenue to support the tourism industry. The fees collected will be incorporated into a special fund for tourism development, which will be used primarily to provide tourists with safety and medical insurance; to develop tourist attractions and create new tourism experiences; and to support tourism research, industry conferences, and the training of tourism professionals.
The Thai government plans to hold public hearings to gather opinions from private industries and all relevant stakeholders. After the hearings, the proposal will be submitted back to the committee for further discussion. If the process goes smoothly, it will be presented to the cabinet for review.
