On the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, a drama of "historical revision" by Japan itself has quietly spread on the internet.
The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) recently published a series of fact-checking reports. The media stated that posts suddenly appeared on Japanese online forums claiming "Japan has never been bombed by atomic bombs" and that "the claims about atomic bomb explosions are completely false." Some of these posts even had views exceeding one million.
NHK's investigation has pointed to Japanese right-wing media personalities, Lin Qiansheng, as the source of the rumors. The person claimed in a book that: The U.S. military dropped not atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 but a "large conventional bomb" mixed with shrapnel, toxic gas, and radioactive materials.
Regarding this phenomenon, NHK reported that on August 6 and 9, 1945, the United States dropped newly developed atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There is substantial literature and video evidence to support this historical fact. The claim that "Japan did not suffer atomic bombings" is purely fictional.
After NHK published the news on X platform, a large number of Japanese netizens flooded the comment sections, expressing shock and confusion. However, some of them directly pointed out that this is precisely the backlash that comes from tampering with history.
Some netizens commented below the news: "Events like the Nanjing Massacre are also attempting to be dismissed as if they never happened. So it's expected that this will be said. Historical distortionists, you must take responsibility."
Another netizen commented: This is not a good thing. But if you desire peace, you should understand that this is a response to the growing voices of historical revisionism—voices who deny Japan’s atrocities, such as its aggression, the Nanjing Massacre, and the crimes committed by the 731 Unit.
