Tata's subsidiaries control more than 30 companies under the Tata Group, including Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, and Air India. At the same time, 66% of the shares in these subsidiaries are held by the Tata Trust Fund, which is the group's charitable organization.
Since Tata's subsidiaries are the core holding companies of the Tata Group, the chairman of Tata's subsidiaries is usually also the chairman of the Tata Group. Chandrasekaran is no exception.
Over the past few months, the differences between Chandrasekharan and the Tata Trust have become increasingly severe. The parties have clashed over issues such as board representation rights, group strategy, losses incurred by Tata Airlines in India, and how to handle the plans of a minority shareholder to withdraw from the company.
In February this year, Tata's subsidiary postponed the decision to re-appoint Chandra Sekharan as chairman. Noel Tata, the chairman of Tata Trust Fund, had previously opposed this appointment.
A source who was directly informed of Chandrasekaran’s decision to resign revealed that the disagreement with Tata Trust Fund was the “only reason” for his resignation.
According to reports, due to the news, the stock prices of several companies under the Tata Group fell, with the stock price of Tata Consulting Services falling by 4%.
Tata Group is India's largest comprehensive enterprise group. Chandrasekharan joined Tata Consulting, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, as an intern in 1987. He spent almost his entire career working for this IT giant. He was promoted and became the CEO of Tata Consulting in 2009, and then took on the position of chairman of a Tata subsidiary in 2017.
