According to The Guardian's report on August 7th, on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a new executive order. This executive order still aims to weaken the birth citizenship provision in the U.S. Constitution. Just five weeks ago, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a similar order that he issued last year.
This administrative order consists of two parts: first, it prohibits foreigners who intend to have children in the United States from entering the country; second, it revokes the citizenship status of children of certain non-citizen groups, including foreign government employees, employees of international organizations, and those who engage in commercial transactions in order to obtain citizenship status.
In November 2015, during the Republican presidential primary campaign in Orlando, Florida, Trump implied that he had a plan to end the harm caused by "anchor babies." This term is a derogatory term used to refer to offspring of illegal immigrants who are born as U.S. citizens.
Trump expressed his dissatisfaction: "You came to this country illegally. You gave birth to a child, and then we will have to pay for that child's education for the next 85 years!"
However, some media believe that Trump's actions have had a clear political undertone from the beginning.
The Guardian notes that Trump's initial rise in politics was related to his statements questioning the place of birth of former U.S. President Barack Obama. Trump claimed that Obama may not have been born in the United States. Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii—just two years after Hawaii became a state of the United States. His mother was a U.S. citizen, and his father was from Kenya.
Later, when Joe Biden chose Harris as his running mate in 2020, Trump also questioned several times whether she was qualified to hold a position that is only open to “natural citizens”.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) strongly opposes Donald Trump’s latest executive orders. In a statement, the ACLU not only criticized Trump but also predicted that the new orders will be defeated in court rulings.
"ACLU's Immigration Rights Project Director, Kadee Wolfe, said: “The Supreme Court has ruled on this issue: the right to birth citizenship is protected by the Constitution. No administrative order can alter the meaning of the Constitution... Any attempt to rewrite the right to birth citizenship through administrative orders will face the same consequences as the previous one.”
