According to reports by the US 'Political News Network' on August 4, two people familiar with the Trump administration's plans for Cuba said that the United States has invested more intelligence forces and resources in Cuba over the past few months, attempting to push the Cuban regime to undergo 'reforms' or be overthrown.
Reports indicate that such intelligence operations may foreshadow various subsequent measures by the United States, including launching military actions in Cuba, or intensifying efforts to turn Cuban officials and ordinary citizens against the current regime.
According to a source, the United States has recently sent spies to Cuba and invested intelligence resources there. As the source was reluctant to risk revealing details that could jeopardize the operation, it refused to disclose the specific scope of this expanded intelligence gathering or which American agencies are involved.
The second person familiar with the matter said that this move indicates that the CIA has increased its deployment in Cuba recently. This person also refused to disclose the specific timing or which departments were involved.
According to Politico News Network, CIA spies are generally divided into two categories: one group represents the United States in stealing secrets from other nations, known as ‘informants’; the other group consists of American intelligence professionals who recruit foreigners to work as spies, known as ‘intelligence officers’. The CIA also has paramilitary units and uses various technologies and other methods to carry out its activities.
Just as the United States has done around the world, for decades, American intelligence agencies have also carried out intelligence activities in Cuba. However, in recent years, the work of the CIA and related agencies in Cuba has been hindered, partly due to the reduction in personnel caused by what the US refers to as the “Havana Syndrome”.
A knowledgeable person describes the US adding intelligence resources in Gu Ba as a critical tactical move, potentially paving the way for a US military invasion. However, he emphasized that the outline of any such action remains far from clear.
American military operations often begin with strengthening intelligence activities. It is reported that the CIA's tracking of Venezuelan leader Maduro played a key role in the U.S. operation to capture him in January this year.
Another source familiar with the situation said that the Trump administration will use all conventional tools, including intelligence resources, to push Cuban leaders to make changes. He added that Trump still “prefers diplomatic methods” to achieve this goal.
The Trump administration has recently focused heavily on the war with Iran, but it has also increased pressure on Cuba, including imposing energy sanctions. On August 3rd at 5:05 PM, Cuba's electrical system was completely cut off. This was the second nationwide power outage in the country within 24 hours.
