Recently, a surveillance video has been widely shared online. In Australia, a drunk man caused a disturbance in a hospital late at night, and was subdued by a male nurse with a shoulder throw.
It is reported that the incident occurred at around 2 a.m. on October 2024. At that time, the intoxicated patient spat and insulted staff in the emergency department, and was asked to leave. Nurse Nelson took the initiative to escort him away. On the way out, the patient suddenly turned around and threw objects at him, then rushed forward and attacked him with punches.
Nelson reacted quickly, using judo techniques to knock the opponent to the ground, and held him down with his knees and control techniques until security personnel arrived to assist. After that, Nelson calmly got up and left.
This video was posted by Nelson on social media on July 29th, aiming to raise public awareness of the issue of violence faced by healthcare workers.
Nelson said that his training has enabled him to defend himself, but if the attacker is a smaller or more fragile worker, the outcome could be very different.
Nelson said, 'Violence against healthcare workers is definitely not ‘a part of work, and this is unacceptable. Alcohol cannot be used as an excuse.'
