On August 2 local time, Sergey Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, confirmed via social media that the explosion at a restaurant in the city center on the 1st was a terrorist attack, resulting in multiple casualties. Sobyanin stated that law enforcement agencies are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
According to the Russian National Counterterrorism Committee, an explosion occurred at a high-end Italian restaurant called Balzi Rossi near Kudrinskaya Square in the center of Moscow on the evening of August 1st, local time. The incident was caused when a woman tried to enter the restaurant carrying a homemade explosive device, but was stopped by security guards. The device exploded, resulting in the death of the woman and the security guard on the scene, along with another customer who was also injured. As of now, the event has caused the death of 3 people and the injury of 21 others.
Officials claim that the explosive device was homemade, and law enforcement agencies have launched anti-terrorism investigations. The restaurant where the incident occurred is located near the Kudrinskaya Square building, one of Moscow’s famous landmarks. At the time of the incident, the restaurant was closed due to private events.
Currently, relevant departments in Moscow are continuing the work of treating the injured and investigating the scene.
