Chinese AI Models Gaining Market Share in US

According to a report by the American 'Los Angeles Times' on July 26th, Chinese artificial intelligence models are attracting increasing attention in the US market and are gradually gaining market share. Some US developers and companies are beginning to adopt Chinese AI products due to their lower prices, continuously improving performance, and most of them using open-source code.

Reports indicate that Raffi Krikorian, the chief technology officer of the American open-source software company Mozilla (which operates the browser Firefox), has recently started using the Kimi K3 model developed by Chinese artificial intelligence company Moonshot for his daily work. He stated that compared to the Claude model introduced by the American artificial intelligence company Anthropic, the K3 model is “more responsive.” Previously, he also used the GLM-5.2 model from the Chinese artificial intelligence company Zhipu to process tasks such as handling documents and emails.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the rise of Chinese AI models continues the impact caused by DeepSeek last year. Since the beginning of this year, Chinese companies such as Zhipu, Moon’s Dark Side, and Alibaba have successively launched new models. These models have performance levels that are close to some leading American products, but at significantly lower prices.

American technology company LilyList founder Kurt Maynhold said that the vast majority of users do not need the most advanced and expensive AI models; they only need a model that is good enough.

The report indicates that another advantage of Chinese AI models is their open-source nature. While some American companies adopt a closed model, Chinese companies generally open their models, allowing developers to carry out secondary development.

American think tank CSIS experts believe that the restrictions imposed by the United States on certain AI technologies may actually create opportunities for Chinese competitors. With its price advantage and open model, Chinese AI models are still likely to continue expanding their influence in the US and global markets.
