Ukraine Attacks Iranian Ship: Accusations of Violations & Escalation

Recently, an incident where the Ukrainian army attacked an Iranian merchant ship has raised concerns among many parties, leading to mutual accusations between Iran and Ukraine.

On the 27th local time, in response to the earlier statements by Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Ghalibaf, Ukraine's Acting Foreign Minister Serhii Sverdlovskaya posted a strong statement on the X platform, saying, "The threat from Iran has no reason and is baseless."

Serbica claimed that Iran is Russia’s “direct accomplice” in the military actions against Ukraine. Iran’s supply of weapons to Russia has “taken lives in Ukraine”. Iran does not have the right to “act as a victim”, let alone “absurdly cite the United Nations Charter to defend its threats”.

Seviga has been the Foreign Minister of Ukraine since September 2024. During this reshuffle of the Ukrainian cabinet, he began serving as acting Foreign Minister on the 17th of this month, in order to maintain the 'continuity in foreign policy' mentioned by the new Prime Minister Koletsky.

On the 25th of this month, the Ukrainian military attacked an Iranian merchant ship in the Caspian Sea. The Iranian side strongly condemned the incident and summoned the Ukrainian envoy to Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ebrahim Raisi posted a statement on the X platform on the 26th, stating that "Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attacked an Iranian merchant ship," resulting in the death of a crew member. This action blatantly violates the United Nations Charter and is carried out under the instigation of Israel, with the aim of dragging Europe into war.

Alagzhi said that in a conversation with the High Representative of the EU for Foreign and Security Policy, Catherine, and Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, he made it clear that the actions of 'that person who gets everything for free in Kiev' will 'definitely get some response'.

As relations between Ukraine and Russia intensify, there is widespread concern that the US-Iran conflict could further influence the Russia-Ukraine situation.
