According to Kyodo News and Japan Economic News, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan announced preliminary results of the population census on May 29 local time. As of October 1, 2025, Japans population was approximately 123 million, a decrease of 3.097 million people compared to 2020, representing a decline of 2.5%.
Reports indicate that this is the third consecutive year of negative growth since Japans population census in 2015, and it represents the largest decline on record.

Data shows that among Japans total population, there are 597,788,26 men and 632,706,98 women.
According to population data from various prefectures and cities in Japan, only Tokyo and Okinawa have seen increases in population. The increase in Tokyo was 1.4%, while that in Okinawa was 0.1%.
The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications states that population aging and a decline in the birth rate are two factors contributing to the increase in natural population decline (where the number of deaths exceeds the number of births). Due to the declining birth rate, it is expected that Japans population will continue to decrease.
