Chinas Open-Source AI Drives Global Shift, Narrowing Gap with US

On the evening of July 9th, former Singapore Foreign Minister Yang Lung-man stated during a fireside chat that China's decision to choose open-source for its artificial intelligence (AI) industry has encouraged large enterprises, including American companies, to also switch to open-source approaches.

According to the Singapore-based newspaper 'Lianhe Zaobao' on the 10th, Yang Rongwen said that China's choice to open-source technology is a good thing. The aim is to promote the rapid expansion of AI across various sectors of the Chinese economy, 'even small countries like Singapore can benefit from this.'

Open-source means that even Singapore can adopt an open-source model, purchase its own services, and utilize large models without opening up its own data. He said, "I see all countries and more and more enterprises are heading in the same direction."

On the evening of the 9th, Yang Ronwen (right) attended a forum to discuss AI and China.

Yang Ronwen also pointed out that the gap between China and the US in the field of AI is narrowing.

He mentioned that for a while, the ‘Seven Giants’ of American technology and the U.S. government believed that the United States was far ahead in the field of AI, and its dominance would continue indefinitely. Later, China launched DeepSeek.

"From then on, China seemed to lag behind the United States by six months to nine months. However, it might only lag behind by three months now," he continued. "When people draw these two lines on a chart, they become curious about when China will surpass the United States. Currently, we don't know, but Americans are deeply concerned about this."

At the meeting, he also refuted the Western claims that China’s economy is declining: “It’s important not to judge China using Western standards. Over the past 40 years, China has never experienced economic recessions… Although China has a large market economy, its operating principles are not capitalist, and they will never be.”

Yang Ronwen said that China has made rapid progress in the entire field of technology. Therefore, it is adjusting its structure to focus fully on AI and technology. Moreover, China has advantages in both energy and talent resources.
