According to Bloomberg, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross called on Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to increase their efforts in expanding production of memory chips in the United States, in order to alleviate the global shortage of this critical component for AI development. This event was hosted by Micron Technology.
He confirmed at an event hosted by Micron Technology that he is in discussions with these two Korean memory chip manufacturers, but refused to disclose any details.
He said that Qualcomm's CEO may not be happy with competitors expanding their presence in the US, claiming that this move is intended to strengthen the resilience of the US chip supply chain.
He certainly wouldn't be enthusiastic, but I want to invite his competitors, Samsung and SK Hynix, to build factories in the US. Mei Guang has already taken a step forward, and now other companies will definitely envy them, so they will have no choice but to follow suit." Lutnick said.
Currently, representatives from Samsung and SK Hynix have not responded to requests for comments.
