Under the guise of so-called "economic sovereignty," several states in the United States have recently implemented policies that restrict Chinese individuals from acquiring land.
On July 8 local time, Josh Stein, the governor of North Carolina in the United States, signed more than a dozen laws, including a new law that restricts China's purchase of land in the state, which has drawn attention.
According to local media WRAL, the new law prohibits individuals, businesses, and other entities associated with the Chinese government from purchasing agricultural land in North Carolina, as well as land near military facilities and other sensitive areas. Supporters claim that this measure is aimed at maintaining national security and preventing foreign influence on critical infrastructure and strategic assets.
In recent years, several states in the United States have gradually tightened restrictions on foreign purchases of land. The countries involved mainly include China, Russia, Iran, and other nations. This legislation in North Carolina is regarded as one of the latest examples of continuous efforts by state governments in the US to implement such restrictions.
Regarding the consideration by several states in the United States to ban Chinese people from buying property, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs once emphasized that the generalization of the concept of national security and the politicization of issues related to economic and trade investments go against the principles of a market economy and international trade rules. Such actions damage the trust of the outside world in the American market environment.
On the same day, Stein also signed several bills related to combating cryptocurrency fraud and improving the efficiency of motor vehicle management departments.
