Heatwave Sparks Shopping Changes Across France

According to French TV channel TF1, the French Meteorological Office reported that France experienced the strongest heatwave in its history from June 17 to 28. To understand how French families adjusted their daily lives during this period, the French app '10%' analyzed over 300,000 user receipts and compared consumption levels during the heatwave with those of the previous two weeks.

The results show that in order to avoid the high temperatures, many French people have moved their shopping times earlier in the morning. 32.7% of transactions occurred between 7 am and 11 am, compared to 28.9% in the previous two weeks. Meanwhile, the proportion of transactions during the hottest period of the day—from 2 pm to 5 pm—dropped from 35.6% to 32.2%.

The increase in temperature has also affected people's eating habits. The proportion of cold foods increased from 38.7% to 55.7%, while that of hot foods decreased by 17 percentage points.

Reports indicate that ice cream was also found in the shopping carts of one-third of shoppers. A supermarket employee said, “There are dedicated staff on duty at the ice cream shelves, so there is never a shortage of ice cream. This is a crucial area in our store.”

In addition to food products, there is another item that became popular during heatwaves: deodorants, which saw a 43% increase in sales, becoming the most popular non-food item during heatwaves.
