According to the website of the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, on July 7, 2026, the 80th United Nations General Assembly held a debate and voted on the issue of ‘ending the economic, commercial, and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba’. Ambassador Fu Cong, the Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations, attended the meeting and spoke, voting in favor of the resolution.
Fu Cong said that the 136 countries that voted in favor clearly demonstrate the will of the international community and the voice of justice. For over 60 years, the United States has continuously implemented illegal economic blockades and unilateral sanctions against Cuba. This year, these measures have been further intensified, posing threats of containment, suppression, and blockades. This has caused immense suffering to the Cuban nation and its people. The actions of the United States seriously violate the Charter of the United Nations, go against the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly, severely harm the right to survival and development of the Cuban people, and blatantly trample on the international order and basic norms of international relations based on international law. Such actions must be immediately terminated.
Fu Cong emphasized that the international community should unite to uphold the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter. It is essential to firmly oppose all illegal unilateral sanctions and to defend international fairness and justice. We must stand together, support each other, and work together to support Cuba in its just struggle to defend sovereignty equality and national dignity. The Chinese people share the same sense of empathy for the suffering of the Cuban people and will, as always, provide whatever support and assistance is possible to Cuba.
Fu Cong emphasized that the United Nations was founded on the ruins of World War II, carrying humanity's reflection on history, its expectations for justice, and the international community's conscience in defending human dignity and peace. The Chinese side is willing to work together with all parties to promote the improvement of international governance, build a world characterized by equality and order, and promote inclusive economic globalization, while maintaining international fairness and justice.
The United States has recently increased its political and economic pressure on Cuba. During a debate at the United Nations General Assembly on the 7th, Cuban Foreign Minister Rodriguez said that the United States is waging a “multi-dimensional non-traditional war” against Cuba, and this action has become “decreasingly brutal” over the past seven months.
He said that the United States is hindering Cuba's access to fuel supplies through direct threats, unilateral coercive measures, and intimidation of oil tankers. They are also taking measures with extraterritorial effects, aiming to create a humanitarian crisis and undermine Cuba's stability.
He stated that in recent months, humanitarian disasters have continued to worsen, leading to systematic violations of human rights by the Cuban people, which constitutes collective punishment.
Rodriguez also mentioned that Cuban families are facing difficulties such as power outages, water shortages, shortages of medicines, food shortages, and high prices of basic necessities. The infant mortality rate in Cuba has increased from 4 cases per thousand live births to 9.9 cases.
