On July 6 local time, U.S. President Donald Trump praised Walmart for reducing the prices of certain goods, calling it a “true patriotic” company, and urged other retailers to follow suit.
“Good news!” Trump posted on social media platforms. “I have just learned that Walmart, one of the largest, best, and smartest retailers in the United States, will reduce prices significantly at its request to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great nation.”
He said that this is “of great significance” for millions of Americans who shop at Walmart, and he also praised Walmart as a “true patriotic company”.
Trump also pointed out that other retailers should follow the example of "these true patriots".
Bloomberg reported that while Trump made these remarks, the White House was trying to address voters' concerns about high costs of food groceries, healthcare, housing, and utilities before the mid-term elections in November.
Economic data shows that consumer prices in the United States have been rising recently, and the situation in Iran has further increased the living costs for Americans.
In response, Trump continued to shift blame onto the Biden administration, claiming that President Biden’s tenure led to “the worst inflation crisis in history”. He also said that this crisis, along with the border crisis, the failure to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, and many other failures, was a “complete disaster”.
After Trump posted the tweet, Walmart issued a statement saying that the company is reducing prices to help consumers save money.
Customers can enjoy discounts on food, grocery, household goods, outdoor goods, toys and clothing, among others. According to the statement, Walmart listed various commodities ranging from corn and beef to snacks and soft drinks.
Walmart did not mention Trump or the U.S. government in its statement, and refused to comment further.
