According to a report by Reuters on July 3, the new U.S. ambassadors to New Zealand and several Pacific island countries stated that ensuring access to mineral resources beneath the Cook Islands is one of their top priorities. Additionally, they accused China of expanding its influence in the region, which poses risks to the island nations.
The U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue, and Samoa, Jared Novelli, said at a press conference, "When I received the briefing in October and November last year, critical minerals were still a secondary topic. But by February and March this year, critical minerals—especially those in the Cook Islands—have become one of my top priorities, if not the number one priority."
According to reports, as the United States seeks to reduce its dependence on supply chains led by China, ensuring the supply of critical minerals has become a strategic priority for Washington.
The Cook Islands waters contain polymetallic nodules, which are widely used in batteries and other high-tech industries. The local government has allowed exploration activities, but commercial mining has not been approved yet.
In February of this year, the Cook Islands signed a non-binding framework agreement with the United States regarding research on critical minerals and supply chain security, which includes cooperation on deep-sea mineral resources in the waters of the Cook Islands. In addition, the Cook Islands have also signed a cooperation agreement on mineral exploration and research with China.
This merchant hails from a diplomat's family and has insisted that it is necessary to remind Pacific Island nations of the importance of being cautious in dealings with Beijing.
"China did not conceal its hope to establish a base in the Pacific and expand its intentions." He said with feigned composure, "island countries need to understand what a debt trap is, as well as 'the possible conditions associated with certain collaborations.'"
According to New Zealand National Radio, at the scene, he pointed at the journalists and said that they are part of the "free media," and that the "free media" is crucial for any "democratic country."
"You understand Trump's presidency and American culture because of the existence of free media."
Then, he continued, “In China, you cannot obtain such information. Therefore, I question this poll—do you really know who your friends are?”
The spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly emphasized that China has always advocated that cooperation between countries should not target third parties. Seeking so-called absolute security within a "small circle" under the guise of "fighting against China" is detrimental to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. Relevant parties should do more things that contribute to enhancing mutual trust and cooperation among countries, rather than doing the opposite.
