Fukuyama: US Internal Divisions Threaten Democracy, But Long-Term Decline Possible

The United States is approaching the 250th anniversary of its founding. Japanese-American scholar Francis Fukuyama once again expresses his views on the global status of China and the United States.

According to a report by South Korean financial media 'Daily Economy' on June 28th, when asked about 'the most important factors threatening American democracy', Fuchsian replied that all threats actually come from within.

"If a country cannot maintain its own system, if society is too divided and lacks clear national goals, then it will eventually decline."

He believes that this is true in ancient Rome and Athens, as well as in Britain and Germany. “The United States is currently in trouble precisely because it has failed to achieve internal unity.”

Fukuma believes that the United States has the ability to recover from its current difficulties.

But, he changed his tone of speech, “The United States may embark on a path of long-term decline, and eventually lose its leading position to other countries, such as China. That would be very unfortunate.”

In the current stage, I believe this possibility cannot be completely excluded, Fushan had no choice but to admit.

This scholar, known worldwide for his theory of "the end of history," has been constantly revising his judgments regarding the end of the Cold War in recent years.

In an interview with the Frankfurt Report this year, he admitted that China has established a “quite impressive system,” and it is necessary to reconsider the assumption that “Western democracy will inevitably win.”
