On July 4, the final day of the World Cup round of 16, there were three matches. The defending champion Argentina fought hard in extra time and narrowly defeated the dark horse Cape Verde with a score of 3-2. Messi opened the scoring for Argentina, and Cape Verde equalized twice. In the end, Argentina advanced through a spectacular header by Romero in the 111th minute.
On the same day, Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 through a penalty shootout. It was the first time in team history that Egypt won a match in the World Cup knockout stage. All AFC teams were eliminated after reaching the round of 32; Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 and also secured a place in the round of 16.

In the previous friendly match in June 2017, France won 5-0 against Paraguay. This match is also the second time in 8 years that the two teams meet again.
