Since US President Trump began his second term, the US government has been releasing more documents related to UFOs and is also seeking to establish a working group dedicated to studying UFOs. According to a report by The Washington Post on July 1st, the White House announced recently that Avi Loeb, former director of the astronomy department at Harvard University and an astrophysicist, will be appointed as the head of the UFO committee.
Lob led a team that was a scientific advisory committee responsible for investigating mysterious celestial objects and the origins of unidentified objects reported by the U.S. military. They reported their findings to the 'Unidentified Aviation Phenomena' working group under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
From 2011 to 2020, Luo was the director of the Department of Astronomy at Harvard University in the United States. His research focused on black holes and the formation of galaxies. Since 2021, he has served as the leader of Harvard's "Galileo Project," a program dedicated to searching for traces of extraterrestrial life.
However, Lobb is a highly controversial expert who has published numerous unfounded 'mysterious theories'. In 2017, the interstellar object 'Oumuamua' passed by the solar system. Lobb claimed that this object might be a slender 'light sail' spacecraft detached from an alien spaceship, rather than a natural phenomenon.
In 2023, the research team led by Lob recovered hundreds of fragments from the Pacific Ocean. He claimed that these fragments might have come from “distant planets or extraterrestrial technology”. However, the academic community does not accept his claim. Other scholars believe that these fragments could be volcanic rock or coal ash.

According to the Associated Press, the UFO Committee consists of over 10 scientists and UFO experts, personally selected by Lobb. Major General Timothy Gallaudet, a retired U.S. military officer, is one of the team members. He claimed that the United States had “recovered” an UFO controlled by “non-human intelligence.” American billionaire Ben Ram has also joined the committee; he is involved in efforts to “resurrect extinct species.”
The organization has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Defense, requesting access to over 50 videos, photographs, and other documents related to UFO sightings. The UFO Committee usually holds closed meetings, but Lobb promised to create a website to disclose the investigation results to the American public.
Analysts and critics have questioned this committee. Steve Dessler, an astrophysicist at Arizona State University in the United States, criticized that Lob often uses “defective research methods” to reach “crazy conclusions” regarding extraterrestrial life. It is unwise to appoint Lob as the head of the UFO committee.
Shaun Kirkpatrick, a physicist who once worked for the U.S. Department of Defense, is concerned that Lob lacks experience in national security work and is also highly controversial in the scientific community. He pointed out that judging by the composition of the UFO Committee, the Trump administration seems to focus more on 'gossip' rather than rigorous scientific research.
