On July 3rd, the 14th World Peace Forum opened in Beijing. At a press conference that afternoon, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State and former Chairman of the National Intelligence Council, Fred Ford, stated that the United States regards China as a "potential enemy," largely due to political considerations.
When talking about the current US policy towards China, Feng Jiaoshi told the Observer Network that the United States has a sense of "inertia" in dealing with relations with China. Over the years, although policies have undergone adjustments and changes, they have remained consistent overall. The core goal is to achieve prosperity, peace, and stability in US commercial dealings. This principle also applies to US relations with all countries.
Feng Jia Shi said that American people do not have 'special hatred' or 'special love' towards China. They view China merely as an ordinary country with development opportunities. American companies will choose their locations based on their own development needs. If they believe their development in China is hindered, they will shift to other regions such as Southeast Asia. This is a result of the changing dynamics of the world, not a fundamental change in American policy.
He mentioned that during the US election cycle, there is a prominent divide among parties, and it is difficult to reach consensus on various issues related to people's livelihoods. Therefore, an increasing number of matters are being considered within the context of national security, because “nobody can oppose issues related to national security.”
"When we were still children, we knew that national security was very important. Back then, we understood that we needed to compete with China. Feng Jia-shi said, 'We will have a midterm election in November, so the policy toward China must be tough because everyone knows China is the 'bad guy,' and American politicians can only say that."
"In electoral politics, some Americans do not like China. Therefore, we often regard China as a potential enemy. But after the elections are over, there is no problem anymore. Everyone says that China does a great job, such as in terms of its roads and infrastructure. Therefore, I think there is no change in the policy towards China," said Feng Jiaoshi.
