According to a report by the European edition of 'Political News Network' in the United States on July 2, a survey conducted by the British polling organization Public First in 24 EU countries last month found that an increasing number of Europeans wish to become independent in the defense sector and no longer rely on the United States. However, there are serious doubts about whether this goal can be achieved.
Surveys show that 40% of respondents said their country could rely on military assistance from other European countries, while only 14% are willing to accept defense support from countries outside Europe, such as the United States.
Public First Vice-Chairman Mei Nong said, “European citizens' sense of security has decreased, and they no longer believe that the United States is a reliable partner.”
European citizens have different views on whether Europe can achieve defense autonomy: 41% believe Europe has the ability to protect itself, while 43% are negative in their opinion.
The defense capabilities of individual countries are also questioned: 58% of respondents believe that their countries are not yet prepared for self-defense, while only 27% believe that their countries have the necessary capabilities.
