Chinese Political Bureau member and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Pompeo on June 30.
Wang Yi said that in May this year, President Xi Jinping reached a series of important agreements with President Trump in Beijing on building constructive strategic relations between China and the United States. These agreements have provided strategic guidance for Sino-US relations over the next three years and beyond, and have defined the direction of development. Building constructive strategic relations is what the people of both countries desire, what the international community expects, and what is fundamentally important for China and the United States. Both sides should eliminate obstacles and overcome challenges, and continue to move forward in this correct direction.
Wang Yi pointed out that both sides should always adhere to the spirit of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, and transform the important consensus reached by the two heads of state into concrete policies and practical measures. Building constructive strategic stability relations is not just a slogan; it requires action, mutual efforts, and long-term commitment. To this end, both sides should expand their cooperation lists, create more positive agendas, and at the same time reduce the list of issues to manage various risks and potential problems. The Taiwan issue affects everything, and the US side is expected to handle matters related to Taiwan with extreme caution.
Both sides agreed that the telephone conversation between the foreign ministers of the two countries was positive and constructive. They agreed to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and to continue to maintain communication in a flexible manner.
